Oh, Kirk Franklin is a Shooter Now? Did he Really Threaten Violence Against an Internet Troll?

Some are saying you better not come for gospel composer Kirk Franklin’s family, because if you do, he’s letting it be known he’s a gun-toting Christian holding his piece and letting the bullets fight his battles.

Is he a peacemaker turned piece holder? Did he actually come out of character when an Internet troll hinted that harm might come to his family?

Maybe.

The debate began with Franklin’s tweet in support of the millions of Muslims President Donald J. Trump banned from entering the US for the next 90 days. “I am a Christian who would rather sit at the table with a Muslim brother than ban him from a home that wasn't originally mine,” wrote the “Smile” songwriter.

It was re-tweeted more than 30,000 times and favorited more than 60,000 times.

Things escalated quickly when a Twitter troll with the handle “The History Carper” took issue with Franklin’s use of the word “brother” to describe someone of a different religion. The social media user hit back at Franklin, saying, “I trust you’ll be leaving your doors unlocked tonight. Oh & your brothers want to know if you have a daughter.”

The latter part of the message riled the protective Chrisitan family man up a bit.

“Yes I have a daughter and the ability to protect her. Please come so I can have a reason to introduce you to it in Jesus name,” said the NAACP Image Award-winning author of The Blueprint: A Plan For Living Above Life’s Storms.

Members of the public read a whole lot into that “it” and filled in the blanks. Now everyone is running with the notion that the self-proclaimed “Jesus Freak” is not as meek and mild as the one he serves. While the Savior might turn the other cheek, his songwriting disciple might cock a gun.

There’s no denying that Franklin’s statement seemed to be a loaded one—pun totally intended.

As his tweet on the Muslim ban gained traction, the frequent conversation-starter took the opportunity to write a heartfelt string of tweets about how America’s bickering, division, pride and prejudice is tearing us apart.

“Morning family. Since my tweet about Muslim ban yesterday, my timeline has been filled with people fighting with each other to be right… using God as their defense and attacking my theology for using the word 'brother' to define my relationship with someone different than me,” said Franklin, who just celebrated his 47th birthday on Jan 26th.

He went on to explain, “It was a term of endearment. But because we have been fed fear we're quick to react and not give grace to each other. We need an international class on communication and agreeing to disagree without attacking character.”

Trump has put an executive order in place banning refugees from 7 predominantly Muslim countries. This extreme measure being called a “Muslim Ban” (though the president denies that’s what it is), is part of the new administration’s effort to tighten national security by keeping radical Islamic terrorists off of US soil.

Currently, an estimated 218 million people are barred from entering the US from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. In the coming days, the executive order, which exempts diplomats and members of international organizations, may broaden out to other countries.

Christians are split in their views on the rightness or wrongness of the executive order. Some say it is evil, discriminatory and wrong. Others agree with Trump’s tough-on-terrorism approach and see it as having nothing to do with hatred or xenophobia, meaning irrational dislike of people from other countries. For them, it's all about prioritizing America and defending the home turf.

But Franklin says, if we don’t put aside our need to be right and really begin listening to and loving one another, “Everyone will lose. No one wins when the agenda is to be right. I don't know everything… no one does. But pride will kill this country.”
